Bend Curling Club is confidently moving toward creating a curling-only facility in Central Oregon. Our club was recently featured in an OPB story (click to read) about our journey to creating a curling-only facility in Central Oregon. We envision a facility where people from all over Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, the US and other countries can come together to learn, participate and compete in the greatest ice sport in the world- curling! In order to achieve this dream, we are currently raising the funds necessary to lease a building, renovate it into a curling rink and begin our operations. We have estimated the cost to get us into a building is $1.2-1.5 million.

We are running a pledge campaign to help us determine how much people can financially give to this project, both within our club and from outside sources. Please take the time to visit our online pledge form and let us know how you can help us attain this goal. We are currently at $735,000 in pledged donations, and are now actively looking for a building to lease in the Bend/Redmond area. If you know of an available commercial warehouse in the Bend or Redmond area with minimum interior dimensions of 65'W x 200'L x 20'H please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (maximum dimensions are 80'W x 220'L x 20'H) with any information you can provide.

This is an example of the type of facility we would like to create. ACC FLOOR PLAN v5 sm

We’re excited about moving forward with this project because it will enable Bend Curling Club to provide:

  • High-quality curling-exclusive ice with consistent conditions where stones will curl both ways on every sheet (and no negative ice!).
  • More ice time and leagues all-week long on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends.
  • New and expanded programming including doubles, women’s events, and wheelchair/adaptive curling.
  • More curling opportunities for youth including youth, juniors, school curling clubs, and college curling clubs.
  • A venue to host events including regional bonspiels, national tournaments, and community gatherings.
  • More educational opportunities such as Learn to Curls, skills clinics, and new curler instruction leagues.
  • Greater community partnerships with local businesses, nonprofit organizations and schools.
  • Practice time for curlers to improve their abilities and become more competitive.
  • A dedicated social space to foster community and ‘broomstack’ (gather for a social beverage) before and after games.

We aim to open a facility that can accommodate at least 4 sheets of curling ice (like bowling lanes). It will also include a ‘warm room & bar’ for spectators to watch curling and for teams to socialize with their opponents, and locker rooms for members to use. Here are our 501(c)3 bylaws, identifying BCC as a non-profit organization.

We look forward to the day we begin operations in this new facility, and hope you can help us realize that day!

Curlers' Code of Ethics

  • I will play the game with a spirit of good sportsmanship.

  • I will conduct myself in an honorable manner both on and off the ice.

  • I will never knowingly break a rule, but if I do, I will divulge the breach.

  • I will take no action that could be interpreted as an attempt to intimidate or demean my opponents, teammates or umpires.

  • I will interpret the rules in an impartial manner, always keeping in mind that the purpose of the rules is to ensure that the game is played in an orderly and fair manner.

  • I will humbly accept any penalty that the governing body at any level of curling deems appropriate, if I am found in violation of the Code of Ethics or rules of the game.

Fair Play

  • Fair Play begins with the strict observance of the written rule; however, in most cases, Fair Play involves something more than even unfailing observance of the written rule. The observance of the spirit of the rules, whether written or unwritten, is important.

  • Fair Play results from measuring up to one's own moral standards while engaged in competition.

  • Fair Play is consistent demonstration of respect for teammates and opponents, whether they are winning or losing.

  • Fair Play is consistent demonstration of respect for umpires, an acceptance of their decisions and a steadfast spirit of collaboration with them.

  • Sportsmanlike behavior should be demonstrated both on and off the ice. This includes modesty in victory and composure in defeat.

Ice Safety

  • Never go onto the ice when your balance is impaired from sickness, excessive alcohol, etc.

  • No consumption of alcoholic beverages during play

Curling Etiquette

  • Start with a handshake. At the beginning of each game, greet the members of the opposing team with a handshake, tell them your name, and wish them “Good Curling!” Make sure everyone knows everyone else.

  • Finish with a handshake. When the game is over, offer each player a hearty handshake and say, “Good game,” regardless of the outcome. The winning curlers traditionally offer their counterparts some refreshment, with the opponents reciprocating.

  • Compliment a good shot. One of the nicest curling traditions is that players and spectators compliment a good shot by either side while withholding comment on a poor shot or a competitor’s misfortune.

  • Be courteous. Avoid distracting movements when a curler is in the hack. When your team is not shooting, keep your distance and stand quietly. Sweepers should stand off to the side between the hog lines. Never walk or run across the ice when an opponent is in the hack. Avoid gathering around the hack at either end of the ice.

  • Be ready. Get into the hack as soon as your opponent has delivered his/her rock. Keep the game moving—delays detract from the sport. Be prepared to sweep as soon as your teammate releases the rock.

  • Wait for the score. Vice skips are the players who determine the score for each end. Other players should wait outside the house until the outcome is settled. Once decided, others may help clear the rocks.

  • Keep the ice clean. The shoes you wear for curling should only be used for curling. Sand and grit from street shoes can ruin the ice surface. Change into a clean pair of flat, rubber soled shoes that can grip the ice.

  • Practice on a different sheet. Those who arrive early to throw a few rocks to practice or warm up are encouraged to do so. But, be sure to avoid using the sheet you’ll be playing on.

  • Be on time. Get to the club in time to change and warm up before the game. When you’re late, you hold up the other players. If you know you’ll be unavoidably late, let your team know in advance.

  • Get a sub. There may be times when you’re not able to curl as scheduled. It’s your responsibility to get a substitute. Call your skip and give the name of the curler subbing for you.

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR Improper conduct, foul or offensive language, equipment abuse, or willful damage on the part of any team member is prohibited. Any violation may result in suspension of the offending person(s) by the curling organization having jurisdiction

What is a Bonspiel?

Curling bonspiels are organized tournaments that bring together teams from various clubs, creating a festive and competitive atmosphere. Typically held over a weekend, bonspiels consist of multiple games where teams compete to accumulate points or advance through elimination rounds.

Curling bonspiels have a rich history rooted in the centuries-old tradition of curling itself. The term "bonspiel" originates from the Scottish Gaelic language, where "spiel" means game or play, and "bon" likely stems from the French word "bonne," meaning good. The first recorded bonspiel took place in Scotland in the 18th century, marking the beginning of organized competitions in curling. Bonspiels quickly gained popularity as a way to foster camaraderie among curlers and different clubs. Over the years, they evolved from informal gatherings to prestigious events, with participants vying for coveted trophies and titles. Today, bonspiels not only uphold the spirit of friendly competition but also serve as vibrant celebrations of the enduring heritage of curling.

Bonspiels often have specific themes, ranging from casual and fun to more formal competitions, allowing participants to showcase their team spirit through creative uniforms or costumes. Whether seasoned curlers or newcomers to the sport, participants share in the joy of the game and the camaraderie forged on and off the ice. Curling bonspiels are not only a testament to the sport's history but also a dynamic expression of the vibrant curling community's passion and unity.

How to Bonspiel

Registration for Bonspiels are generally months in advance and can fill up quickly. The Bend Curling Club currently has 1 bonspiel per year, generally in November. The closest bonspiels to Bend happen at the Evergreen Curling Club in Portland, OR and at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle, WA. See our Out of Town Bonspiels page for a list of nearby bonspiels.

Bonspiels generally have their own format which can differ based on experience, gender (Men’s & Women’s), full teams of 4 or doubles with 2 people. There are also specific qualifying events for national rankings if you want to compete on a more serious level. 5 and Under bonspiels are common and a great way to play with similarly experienced players if you are newer to the sport.

Most bonspiels are team registration but many allow for individual registration too. Individual registration means you will get paired up with other individual players for the bonspiel.

Bend Curling Club strongly encourages all members to experieince the fun of bonspieling at different clubs and is committed to helping members get signed up and connected with other team members. We recognize the drive to create our own dedicated ice grows the more people experience playing at dedicated rinks. Please contact us if you need help signing up.

For decades, various groups of individuals came together in Bend, OR to organize attempts at bringing a full-sized ice rink to the city. In 2010 enthusiasts of hockey formed the non-profit Bend Ice organization and eventually joined forces with Bend Park and Recreation to help create our ice rink known as the Pavilion.

With the dream of ice becoming a reality in 2015, Tom Pietrowski wiggled into a seat at the table to include the discussion of forming a curling program. Tom had relocated 10 years earlier from Wisconsin and had been introduced to curling shortly before moving to Bend. Together with Chet Liew, a converted hockey player, and Janice Robbins, who as a child slid kettles of frozen water on the ice pond across from her house, the beginnings of Bend Curling Club formed. Working with Russ Holliday and Kevin Collier of Bend Park and Recreation they started a Recreation League when the Pavilion opened in late 2015.

By January 2016 Bend Curling Club was officially formed with 26 inaugural members and started playing Saturday League games that winter.

The club hosted its first Bonspiel in 2017. The club has Level 1 and Level 2 instructors available to teach all newcomers and novice curlers the intricacy and beauty of the game.

Since day one the dream for Bend Curling Club was to have their own dedicated, indoor ice. To that end members are working tirelessly to make this dream a reality.
